What the Boxing Ring Taught Me About Corporate Culture.

The ring is truth — and culture is your training camp. Discipline, trust, and preparation decide what happens under pressure.

Preparation over performance When the bell rings, you fall back to your training.

It surprises people when I tell them that alongside my corporate career, I have spent nearly twenty years as a boxing manager in the world of elite sport.

On the surface, a boardroom and a boxing ring couldn't look more different. One is polished and polite; the other is raw and physical. But if you look closer, the lessons are identical.

Boxing is the ultimate study in truth. In the ring, you cannot hide. You cannot “spin” your way out of a corner.

If your preparation was poor, you will be exposed. If your corner team doesn't trust each other, the plan falls apart. If your mindset wavers for a second, the consequences are immediate.

In the corporate world, the consequences are slower, but they are just as damaging.

I see organizations that want the "win"—the high customer scores, the efficiency, the growth—but they neglect the discipline required to get there. They skip the preparation. They ignore the toxic culture in the "locker room." They expect their teams to perform under immense pressure without giving them the right corner support.

Elite sport teaches you that performance isn't an accident. It is the result of relentless discipline, absolute trust, and the resilience to keep moving when you take a hit.

When I work with boards and leadership teams, I bring this lens with me. I don't treat culture as a soft, fluffy concept. I treat it like a training camp. Are we fit for purpose? Do we trust the person standing next to us? And when the pressure hits—when the bell rings—do we have the discipline to stick to the plan?

Resilience isn't about never getting hit. It's about knowing exactly who you are when you do.
