The Biography

Derek Redmond is one of Britain’s most recognisable sporting figures. A World, European, and Commonwealth Champion, he is best known for the moment at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics that defined the human spirit for a generation. Ranked as one of the top motivational speakers globally, Derek translates the psychology of elite sport into actionable business frameworks.

1. The Champion (Tokyo 1991)

Before the heartbreak of Barcelona, there was the glory of Tokyo. In 1991, Derek was a key member of the British 4x400m relay team—alongside Kriss Akabusi, John Regis, and Roger Black— that pulled off one of the greatest upsets in athletics history. They defeated the heavily favoured US team to win World Championship Gold, running the second-fastest time in history. This victory is the foundation of his work on high-performing teams.

2. The Moment (Barcelona 1992)

It is the video viewed over 500 million times. In the 400m semi-final, Derek’s hamstring snapped. Refusing to stay down, he hobbled toward the finish line. When his father, Jim Redmond, broke through security to support him, they finished the lap together. Referenced by President Barack Obama and voted the "Most Inspiring Olympic Moment" by NBC, it serves as the ultimate case study in resilience: “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”

3. The Reinvention (Multi-Sport Athlete)

Most athletes retire after a career-ending injury. Derek reinvented himself. He went on to play professional basketball for England, professional Rugby Sevens, and became a national champion in both kickboxing and motorcycle endurance racing. In his 50s, he became an undefeated semi-pro boxer. Derek is living proof that transferrable skills and mindset can conquer any new domain.
